[4E] Health Knowledge (Topic: Cancer, A Growing Threat) ចំណេះដឹងសុខភាព (ប្រធានបទ៖ ជំងឺមហារីក )
1. Introduction
Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide. It accounted for 7.4 million deaths (around 13% of all deaths) in 2004. The most frequent types of cancer differ between men and women. Deaths from cancer worldwide will continue to rise and it is estimated that there will be 12 million deaths due to cancer in 2030.
2. What is cancer?
Cancer is uncontrolled growth and spread of cells that can affect almost any part of the body. One defining feature of cancer is the rapid creation of abnormal cells that grow beyond their usual boundaries, and tend to then invade adjoining parts of the body and spread to other organs. This process is referred to as mestastasis Mestastases are the major cause of death from cancer. Many cancers can be prevented by avoiding exposure to common risk factors, such as tobacco smoke. In addition, a significant proportion of cancers can be cured - by surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy - especially if they are detected early.
4. Who gets cancer?
Cancer affects everyone - the young and old, the rich and poor, men, women and children. It has a tremendous burden on patients, families and societies, and accounts for one in every eight deaths in Cambodia. Although the mortality rates due to cancer exceed mortality rates for AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined, many of these deaths can be avoided.
5. How does cancer develop?
The organs in our body are made up of cells. Cells divide and multiply as the body needs them. When these cells continue multiplying unnecessarily, the result is a mass or growth, also called a tumor. These growths are considered either benign or malignant. Benign is noncancerous and malignant is cancerous Benign tumors are rarely life-threatening and do not spread to other parts of the body. Then can be removed but it is not always necessary. Malignant tumors, however, often invade nearby tissue and organs, spreading the disease.
